I recently completed a special project for pottery dealer Jason Jacques. This long-term project involved creating a giant wax mural at the entrance of the gallery. I first painted 42 vessels on the wall—all of which Jason deemed 'the greatest hits' of his collection. Next I covered the entire mural in opaque tinted beeswax. I painted it on while hot. Finally, I carved into the wax with homemade wooden engraving tools to reveal elements of the painting underneath. I finished the piece by shaving down areas and polishing the wax to allow certain details to really glow. This video is a time-lapse of the 3-month project.
Jason Jacques Gallery is located at 29 East 73rd Street in Manhattan and is open by appointment.
